Sugar: How much is too much?

Did you know that the maximum daily intake of sugar for an adult is 30g? This includes both natural sugar from food, fruits, milk as well as added sugar.

Majority of fruits, Foods, diary products contains sugar these type of sugar are not harmful. However, sugar is also added to all sorts of foods to make them taste sweet. Some are not only present in the foods you might expect, like cakes, sodas, and desserts, but are also hidden in foods like ketchup, bread, and cereal. Agave nectar, dextrose, honey, sucrose, fructose, glucose and molasses are all examples of sugar.

Sugar and your health

It is important to understand the risk of taking too much sugar and break your addiction. According to Action on Sugar, added sugar is not only “a major contributor to obesity,” but there is also “increasing evidence that it raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and fatty liver.“ Other sugar-related diseases are heart disease, tooth decay, diabetes, and cancer. Therefore, it has been advised that an adult should consume no more than 30g of sugar per day.

Ways to cut down your SUGAR

  • Take sugar-free cereals.
  • Swap water for sugary drink
  • Don’t keep sugary drinks and snacks at home
  • When baking, cut the sugar in your recipe by half.
  • Check food labels and always pick the product with the lowest amount of sugar.
