How to keep your lungs healthy

The lungs are the two major organs for respiration, located at both side of the chest. Did you know that we breathe in and out about 22,000 times a day? We are powered by breathing and our lungs fuel us with oxygen, our life-sustaining gas.

Your lungs are a crucial component of the respiratory system, they do not only aid breathing but also expel carbon dioxide which is harmful. We can safeguard our lungs by limiting some harmful behavior both personal and environmental factors.

Let’s look at ways to take care of our lungs.

Regular Exercise

Exercise is essential, it is good for your heart and mind, also a good way to keep your lungs healthy. Regular exercise strengthens the muscles between your ribs and as you breathe in and out during exercise, your lungs works harder to provide oxygen to your muscle. So continuous exercise keeps your lungs functioning properly.

Don’t smoke

Smoking significantly increases your risk of developing cancer. People who smoke are 15 to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer or die from lung cancer than people who do not smoke. According to World Health Organization (WHO), lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death. When you breathe in tobacco, thousands of chemicals enter your lungs. Many of these chemicals have the potential to damage the DNA in your lung cells. Your body keeps fighting to repair the damage but, over time your body can no longer repair the damages. Smoking can also damage your air sacs called “alveoli” and causes difficulty in breathing.

The more you smoke, the higher your risk!

Reduce Air Pollution

Exposure to air pollutants can gradually damage your lungs and impair your ability to breathe. Your lungs become more susceptible to infections and disease as you age. So, it is important to be aware of potential pollutants in your environment so that you can safeguard and maintain the health of your lungs. Always take precautions, take the necessary safety measures, to avoid air pollution.
